How Do I Become a Registered Psychotherapist in Ontario?

Students typically apply for registration with the CRPO after completing 90% of their program at OPCC, usually around February or March of their fifth year. Upon approval by the CRPO, our students become members as Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying).

After graduation from OPCC, a copy of their final transcript is sent to the CRPO to complete their registration process, which includes:

  1. Completing the Jurisprudence eLearning exam provided by the CRPO.
  2. Sitting for and passing the competency exam.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for registration with the CRPO through OPCC, you must:

  1. Complete an Approved Program: Graduate from a CRPO-recognized program or an equivalent program that meets CRPO’s education and training requirements.
  2. Accumulate Clinical Experience: Complete a minimum number of direct client contact hours and clinical supervision hours.
  3. Meet Professional Competencies: Demonstrate competencies in the CRPO’s entry-to-practice competencies.

Steps to Register

1. Complete Your Education and Training

Ensure that your education and training program is recognized by the CRPO. OPCC offers accredited programs that meet these requirements, providing you with the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

2. Gain Clinical Experience

Engage in direct client contact and receive clinical supervision as part of your training. OPCC provides opportunities for supervised clinical practice to help you fulfill these requirements.

3. Prepare Your Application

  • Proof of education and training
  • Evidence of clinical experience- OPCC’s clinical practicum is also recognized by the CRPO and thus upon graduating we will send in confirmation of your supervision and client contact hours.
  • Completed application forms and fees

4. Submit Your Application

Submit your application through the CRPO’s online portal. Ensure that all required documents are included and that your application is complete to avoid any delays in processing.

5. Complete the Jurisprudence Learning Module

All applicants must complete the Jurisprudence Learning Module, which covers the legal, ethical, and professional standards of practice in Ontario.

6. Write the Registration Exam

If your application is approved, you will be eligible to write the CRPO registration exam. Prepare thoroughly and schedule your exam at a convenient time.

Additional Information for Qualifying Members

Qualifying members have five years to fulfill all client contact and supervision requirements. Recent graduates have one year to complete the Competency Exam. Qualifying members can attempt the exam twice. If unsuccessful, they will be recommended for upgrading skills/education and can take the exam a third time upon completion.
